Teacher’s “Holidays”

Posted by arlekeno on June 26, 2012

Hi All,

Love to use this information when discussing our ‘holidays’ (check my Maths but I think you get the idea!);

* We have no flexibility – always at the most expensive and difficult time to have a ‘holiday’ etc.
* We have no overtime, allowances for camps, parent teacher, sport coaching, School Spectacular, Regional events at night  etc etc.

 *
An employee on a 9 day fortnight;

4 weeks annual leave (20 days) plus Roster Days (23 days) = leave per 12 months therefore is equal to = 43 days + all public holidays (10 days) = 53 days or 10.6 weeks + most will get overtime and can have flexibility with when time is taken.

 *
An employee on a RDO per month;

4 weeks annual leave (20 days) plus Roster Days (13 days) = leave per 12 months therefore is equal to = 33 days + all public holidays (10 days) = 43 days or 8.6 weeks + most will get overtime and can have flexibility with when time is taken.

BTW: When they state that they work extra hours for the privilege you can say we work extra hours for no remuneration.

 *
Teachers;

11 weeks non-face-to-face = 55 days minus the public holidays within those breaks (6-7 days) = 49 days or 9.8 weeks. This does not include work done during that time…….

When you confront people with these figures they are usually lost for words. Most if you ask if during this time they would go into work, take students somewhere at night for no extra pay etc will say no. Our ‘holidays’ don’t look as good when you hit them with the raw numbers. For the record, a lot of workers are under these types of conditions and those that aren’t are often on much better pay then us.

Almost the End of the financial year

Posted by arlekeno on June 7, 2012

The Year is almost halfway through and as such I will soon be doing my taxes. I do enjoy the end of the financial year as I view my tax return as a kind of enforced saving.

It will be even more interesting this year with the start of my new business venture.

In short though it has been an interesting last few months, getting registered etc takes a lot of time and paperwork. This has been helped by regular work, which will hopefully continue until the end of teh Calendar year.

Next month will most importatnly see the start of my last subject. Bibliographic standards. Fun and games will ensue. I shall try to pass and finish the study, try and secure a permanent job before the government bans permanent jobs and try not to go broke in between.
