Mayday

Posted by arlekeno on May 1, 2012

Happy Mayday, today we celebrate about the greatest achievement that anarchists have ever gained us. the 8 hour day. Thanks guys, We know you didn’t let that bomb off in New York a century ago.

In other news, I have just used to new systems open to NSW Teacher Librarians. 1) the new online catalogues through the DET portal and 2) The New SCIS search page.

1) The new catalogues are only for office supply stuff, so no book orders, but the font office love it because they can now read my orders (my writing is that bad). The search engine itself is not that good, you need to play around with it to learn it, but once you do it is not a bad system. I am very glad we don’t HAVE to use it, but it is nice to have it there, and when it is working I think it will be oretty good.

2) the New SCIS search engine. I HATE IT! my Library Assistant HATES IT. but what is worse it is heard to say why, I think it is less detailed and harder to read, but ultimately it is just a less user friendly experience. I wish i had the words to express that more clealy, I can for the MAANG v YAMMER Debate, that is down to visual clarity and notifications, but for this I would just like to tell the Schools Catalogue Information Service to press UNDO!

Finally since it is May day, and a labour holiday in some states (not mine) some Pro my job stuff. A letter from the Current Premier, when he was in opposition.

Mr O’Farrell’s letter reads in part:

“ ….I read your letter with interest and share your concerns about teacher librarians in NSW.  The situation teacher librarians are facing in NSW is one I feel strongly about.  While I will endeavour to continue to raise the general issue, I recognise the important role of libraries in our schools and the critical role of teacher librarian … I have referred [this] matter … for inclusion in our policy development process …”

The letter is dated 23 October 2007.

Lets hope the role of the T.L. is still recognised when “Local Schools, Local Decisions” is introduced.

Solidarity.

April Filler

Posted by arlekeno on April 18, 2012

Well, I have been enjoying having a semester of not actually studying. I am able to NOT BE STUDYING and not feel guilty about it. I do wish I was studying though so things would be over and done with sooner but until then, time to enjoy.

I have been filling my time with travel, looking for work, and of course, writing. I have had 4 articles accepted for the year and am trying to get onto two new blogs as an Author.

The big challenge however is to do with work, both securing full time work before “Local Schools, Local decisions” kicks in. A lot of teachers everywhere are nervous about what this will do to teaching. And the other challenge is to register myself as a sole trader.. but Government websites are not always logically set out.

Such is April. Some more time off, then some time to remember. then back to the real world.

Suite 101 on Information science.

Posted by arlekeno on March 14, 2012

since I am currently on break between studying. I am doing some professional learning at work

and also reading in my field for fun, as well as taken on more web work.

A few years ago I stated looking at suite 101 as a place to sell my articles, since I already have

a couple of outlets who already appreciate me I chose not to , but now I am thinking of expanding again.

So I am currently looking at articles on information science. Here is one I found which contains a lot of information I didn’t know, despite being very nearly at the end of a degree in the subject. Enjoy

Part 2A: INF506 Evaluative Report. Draft1

Posted by arlekeno on January 31, 2012

http://liberalibro.wordpress.com/2012/01/21/olj-2-a-to-z-of-social-networking/

http://liberalibro.wordpress.com/2012/01/20/olj-1-the-library-channel-of-asu/

Part 2A

Summary.

During this course, through readings, OLJ activities and the Assessment tasks the objectives of the course have been met. The various networking tools have been joined, used and reviewed with reference to the articles provided in the modules and found in external study.

What it means to be a Librarian 2.0 has been taught using the tools of web 2.0 such as Youtube videos.

These tools have been studied for their ability to meet the needs of organisations and individuals, in both OLJ and Assessments.

And the procedural and policy issues, as well as the social issues have been commented on.

Objectives of the course.

1) demonstrate an understanding of social networking technologies;

This objective was met in all of the OLJs and the course. To take part in the course we needed to join Twitter, Facebook, etc. In completing the activities in the notes and for the assessment these tools had to be read about and used.

The various readings in the notes explaining the differences between Library 1.0 and 2.0. and these technologies were examined in the way they could be used by a Librarian 2.0, an example of this can be seen in OLJ 3 on delicious where the tool was found to be useful for its collaborative ease.

2) demonstrate an understanding of concepts, theory and practice of Library 2.0 and participatory library service;

This objective was demonstrated in all 3 of the OLJ’s.

In OLJ 1, the use of the “4 C’s” collaboration, conversation, community and content creation, was discussed, and how they were being met by A.S.U. Libraries using Web 2.o technologies. Understanding that Library 2.0 uses Web 2.0 applications to meet these 4C’s.

In OLJ 2, Theoretical and practical issues of using Social networking in a library were discussed and how they could be of benefit and or carried out. Also the need for a focussed direction was discussed.

In OLJ 3, The Concepts of following, sharing and cloud storage were also covered with reference to Delicious, a service I have been using for several years now, but which could easily be turned to an online reference list for a class.

3) critically examine the features and functionality of various social networking tools to meet the information needs of users;

In OLJ 3, Delicious is critically examined and found to be very useful academically, both for students/teachers storing links or for sharing, in no small part due to the ease of its interface as well as the service it provides for free.

OLJ 2. discusses how Social networking can be used to communicate information to readers, and how a library page could be used to pass on links to eBooks or Videos.

OLJ1 reviews how a library is using these features to meet information needs. For example, the speed and simplicity of twitter to supply quick responses.

4) evaluate social networking technologies and software to support informational and collaborative needs of workgroups, communities and organisations; and

This objective is covered mostly in OLJ 3, on Delicious, with the examination of the group following feature, which enables a workgroup or community to add links. This objective was also covered somewhat in OLJ one with discussion on ASU library’s communication with students.

5) demonstrate an understanding of the social, cultural, educational, ethical, and technical management issues that exist in a socially networked world, and how information policy is developed and
implemented to support such issues.

These issues were explored mostly in OLJ 2, with the references to the equality of access to the internet, the ethics of not using these tools, which are culturally part of the connected generation, as well as reference to school policies regarding social media.

The technical management issues were mentioned regarding clickview and the DER laptops, fortunately, with the exception of second life, which, from my experience, doesn’t work properly without a high speed connection and an up to date computer, most of the social networking tools are simple enough even to be accessed to a degree by smart phone, let alone the school system.

What makes a friendly interface?

Posted by arlekeno on January 27, 2012

I am just about to start on my evaluative report for Ass.2 and I was thinking about objectives, e.g.  Understanding Technologies involved and the one on evaluation.

Why are some layouts better than others?

why did Hi-5 never really take off? or Myspace get surpassed? I know that I really dislike MAANG ( NSW GOVT ) because it is slow, crowded, hard to sort through and MANY other reasons, but in the end  a lot of this is personal. I like to see larger segments of text fro example. Who judges what is a good layout?

ASU LIBRARY MINUTE

Happy SOPA Day.

Posted by arlekeno on January 19, 2012

Have to say I am liking the WordPress.com homepage.

ever blog Censored. Sometimes I wonder what the American Government thinks… Then I remember campaign contributions from companies.

Anyway, here are the Objectives of INF506 that I have to meet for Ass.2

Lyn HayWasan, Part 2A requires you to write a 750 word evaluative statement using three (3) of your OLJ as evidence of meeting the learning objectives of the subject. The learning objectives for INF506 are listed in the beginning of the INF506 Subject Outline. There is 5 of them, they are:

– demonstrate an understanding of social networking technologies;
– demonstrate an understanding of concepts, theory and practice of Library 2.0 and participatory library service;
– critically examine the features and functionality of various social networking tools to meet the information needs of users;
– evaluate social networking technologies and software to support informational and collaborative needs of workgroups, communities and organisations; and
– demonstrate an understanding of the social, cultural, educational, ethical, and technical management issues that exist in a socially networked world, and how information policy is developed and
implemented to support such issues.

So you use these a reference points in your evaluative statement, and use your 3 selected OLJ tasks to show how these have contributed to your learning across these 5 objectives.

Does that makes sense to you?

ANYWAY, Am taking a day off study coz my eyes hurt from too much puter time.

Enjoy the day all… .

Quick post during Ass.1

Posted by arlekeno on January 12, 2012

Having a few issues with Assessment 1 at the moment.

mainly I would rather be at the Sydney Festival.

Secondly, how do I reference an example of somethign I would do in a class?

Thirdly, referencing in general, everything so far is from Education journals or Tech mags online, no actual books, I may have a book free bibliography.

Finally, the word count is bugging me, I feel like I am leaving some explanation out about each of the web tools I am doing because of the trying to keep it under 2500 words.

Just hope a lot of what I am leaving out is assumed knowledge I guess. Back to critically evaluating myself.

Module 4: Making Web 2.0 work for your organisation

Posted by arlekeno on December 30, 2011

Module 4: Making Web 2.0 work for your organisation
Social media, social networking and libraries: Why bother?

In all organisations, new initiatives usually require significant amounts of $$$$ to kick-start new projects. Libraries and information agencies are no exception. However, working towards a Library 2.0 approach does not necessarily require major start-up funding, but it does require support from management for individuals and/or teams to invest some of their time into exploring the potential application of Web 2.0 technologies.

Can’t agree more, you tell me to do something but give me no time or budget you are telling me it is either not important or you want me to fail.

Now, time for a good quote on why we blog. Terri Bennett, director of the Webster Public Library (WPL), NY, believes blogs have the power to break down the institutional wall between libraries and their community members. “In my view, the more human we look, the more we personalize our services, the more connected we will be to our patrons,”   http://www.libraryjournal.com/article/CA6497263.html

Explore the social networking ideas in AnnaLaura Brown’s two blog entries about top tools and trends for libraries on her Social Networking in Libraries [blog]:

Questions:

  1. Which of these tools and trends has already impacted on your library or organisation?
  2. Which of these tools and trends have been discussed by people within your library or organisation as having potential in supporting its goals?
  3. Which of these tools and trneds have not yet hit your library or organisation’s radar?

If you have identified one or more tools or trends under Q2 and/or Q3, you may wish to consider exploring one of these further as the topic for your project (Assignment 1).

1) Only the Online referencing tools have been added to my schools arsenal I think. The twitter, Facebook,text a librarian are not always appropriate in a school library setting… especially when some of these features were only recently unbanned. ThougeReaders could be handy.

2) I think Blogs or an FB page could be useful for posting about new books, upcoming events etc. I am all for the new Google tools and I think training is kind of already happening, but would like more formal web 2.0 training to be done.

3) Mobile apps,(though i can search the catalog on my phone) podcasting, Flickr… though we could use flickr for the archives.

WHY TO USE IT? (And what to use)

CMO-SOCIAL LANDSCAPE-R5

Great Link to a site with lots of ways to use tools such as twitter.

http://www.mrsbentheim.com/w/page/21735315/Teaching%20Resources

Quick break from the module. I am keen to use google. Google + fpr communication, Docs for resources, sites as blogs or libguides.

I really want more google traingin! (or practice)…     Ok, back to the module.

Ways to use Twitter

Working the social: Twitter and FriendFeed – Let these social networking services do the filtering for you in Library Journal by Laura Carscaddon & Colleen S. Harris (15 June 2009)

17. Answer someone else’s general question, and reply to those who ask you a direct question @your_Library.

18. Schedule to meet fellow librarians at a conference, or organize a professional tweet-up in your area.

19. Make a personal connection with other librarians by sharing your favorite new book, video of the day, quote of the day, blog post, etc.

A former school librarian, Sonja Cole is the host of Bookwink.com, a video booktalk web site for kids. You can follow her on Twitter @bookwink

Now, with that done, My brain shut down about an hour ago. Module 4 over, only Mod 5 to go and then the assessments.
